Transformations t Before In New York City, space is often at a premium, which was the case with this small kitchen. In fact, the layout was so tight, when the dishwasher was open, you were at risk of getting stuck behind it, according to the designer. The space was also dark and lacking in overall functionality, while the low ceilings – at odds with the ceilings in the rest of the apartment – further contributed to the too-tight feeling. I f you work in the design industry, it's hard not to be captivated by the transformation process – taking an ugly, dated or poorly functional space and making it look and work better for the client. While there's plenty of hard work involved in taking a project from conception to completion, there's something inspiring about reviewing where a space started – and how it turned out. This month, KBDN's Transformations department takes a before and after view of a problem-solving kitchen that incorporates both aesthetic and functional improvements. t After Placement was key to making this small space function at maximum efciency, and designer Alexandra Zwicky and the Efeti USA team began by relocating the cooktop/oven, and swapping the positions of the sink and dishwasher. To make the space feel larger, the ceiling was raised from 8' to 10.5'. A bright and light color scheme also creates a more airy and open feeling, with Efeti Luce Door Style cabinetry in wood veneer fnish and Carrara Marble countertops and backsplash. To maximize storage space, the cabinet to the left of the Sub-Zero refrigerator is a pull-out pantry. The appearance of the space is further streamlined by hiding the cofee maker, toaster and microwave in the cabinet to the right of the Franke sink. High-end appliances also upgrade the space, including a Miele convection oven, dishwasher, induction cooktop and pull-out hood and Thermador wine refrigerator. Ad Index COMPANY CIRCLE NO.
