An 'over-scaled' island is
created here by specifying
countertop end panels that
cascade to the foor. Appliances
do not interrupt the continuity of
the space: A microwave drawer is
installed under the countertop, the
dishwasher is out of the space and
the refrigerator is paneled.
This kitchen occupies a
substantial amount of the foor
space in an open living plan –
but it certainly is not the focal
point of the room. The 'pop' of
color in the orange chair in the
foreground catches the eye, as
does a major piece of art hanging
on a nearby wall.
Within the kitchen plan, the
designer balanced the scale of the
cabinet storage system with the
scale of the overall room by creating
a 'block of space' along the back
wall. To accomplish this, the use
of traditional wall cabinets to the
right of the tall appliance/storage
elevation was avoided. Unusual wall
cabinets extend to the countertop
and feature double drawer units
below normal hinged doors in place
of a standard backsplash.
