Project Case Study ENHANCED FUNCTIONALITY The 48" GE Monogram refrigerator and freezer, sheathed in customstained walnut panels, promotes functionality and family living. Matching cabinetry, custom-designed by Khachi and manufactured by Marana Kitchens in Toronto, enhance the room's style. Contrasting cabinetry features a solid colored lacquer exterior with maple veneer plywood interiors. Two door styles and base moulding profles further diferentiate the two types of cabinetry. Khachi attached an eating table to the island. He says, "Adding a dining table would have been a disaster. The island would have looked too small without the eating table, and if I forced a dining table into the space, I would have needed seating all the way around it, which would have made the space too tight." Layers of light accentuate architectural features as well as enhance functionality. Skylights provide natural light, while glass-bottom upper cabinets allow light to fow through, illuminating countertop space below. Khachi notes, "I often advise clients to cut back on construction costs so they have enough money for decorating, styling and fnishing, which can include adding light fxtures, furniture and accessories." Decorative Plumbing Products, Bathtubs & Accessories. Each plumbing fxture is a refection of our relentless pursuit of quality and improvement IN THE DETAILS A custom walnut cutting board www.stromplumbing.com Circle No. 22 on Product Card features a half-circle cutout that lines up with the stainless steel lid leading to the integrated compost bin built into the island. A garbage drawer, also in the island, opens via a Blum Servo-Drive. Khachi says, "It's all about practical solutions. While it's expensive to do every drawer like this, including it on the garbage drawer is important so you don't ever have to touch it." The Cambria countertop features a custom 1/8" step down profle for understated elegance. A slight bumpout at the sink and cooktop areas add interest. Electrical outlets are hidden, including these behind fip-down panels on the island. 34 | Kitchen & Bath Design News September 2013
