Modern Farmhouse Meets the Beach
AFTER
Grubb quickly found out that containing the new design within the confines of the existing footprint
was not going to work; the original kitchen was segmented by oddly shaped walls of neighboring rooms
and a low ceiling. His clients were on board with expanding into the adjacent patio space, which not
only allowed for a vaulted ceiling, but also added much needed natural light. In keeping with the clients'
traditional modern aesthetic, white shaker-style cabinetry was selected and fitted with traditional bin
pulls. Glass panels were installed in the upper cabinets for display purposes and to allow a more open
feeling by breaking the visual plane of all solid door fronts. The vaulted ceiling was covered in tongue
and groove painted pine and framed with white painted beams, which emphasizes the height and adds a
sense of volume to the space. The gray porcelain tile flooring, chosen for its durability and resemblance
to wood, was laid out in a herringbone pattern. To create the desired modern farmhouse feel, an
integrated apron sink, Calacatta marble countertops and pillowed tile backsplash were used, while
beach-inspired lighting and rustic bar stools complete the look.

BEFORE
Christopher J. Grubb of Beverly Hills, CA-based
Arch-Interiors Design Group Inc. was tasked with
updating the kitchen of a recently purchased home in
Santa Monica, CA. The clients, a newly married young
professional couple, sought to bring an open modern
farmhouse feel to their small, outdated and cramped
kitchen. They also wanted the space to showcase a
beach cottage influence.
