Ruloph says that outdoor kitchens have matured into a stan- dard for luxury homes, rather than an exception, and so, too, has the look and feel of this space. "The biggest feature needs to be that the host stays with the guests," he says, "so design an outdoor kitchen with everything they will need to stay outside." Having the space and equipment set up to host in the way consumers are accustomed to hosting is vital to an outdoor space. "People want their outdoor kitchens to perform just as if they were inside entertaining," says Diana Franklin, brand manager for U-Line Corp., in Laguna Beach, CA. Just as inside, outdoor kitchen design revolves around en- tertaining. "People are looking to embrace and welcome their guests into an outdoor oasis," says Jim Ginocchi, president and founder of Coyote Outdoor Living in Carrollton, TX. "Outdoor kitchen enthusiasts are starting to utilize design elements in their outdoor kitchen that match their home, whether that be stone or brick, with durable countertops such as tile, granite or concrete," he says. PRACTICAL MATTERS Though an outdoor kitchen should refect the style and utility of an indoor space, there are some specifc issues that arise when you move the equipment outside. Designers must be aware of these, and address them in the initial design to avoid issues later. Placement of particular items and how well the pieces will hold up to all types of weather are important considerations when setting up an outdoor entertainment area. Some of the top concerns include water lines for sinks and ice makers, electrical outlets and where to place gas lines for proper hook up, says Ginocchi. Designers also need to account for wind and sun, to make sure these elements do not interfere with outdoor cooking, he adds, and, in colder climates, cooling appliances and sink lines must be winterized to avoid freezing. Russ Faulk, v.p./design for Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet, headquartered in Chicago, IL says, "As the quality of equipment gets better, winterization becomes less of an issue overall, but designers do need to keep the elements and the climate in mind when specifying components and selecting materials." Incorporating the right products to increase comfort in the outdoor kitchen can extend the outdoor cooking season for clients, he adds. It's also important to choose products made of quality mate- rials, says Stephanie Muraro-Gust, product marketing manager at Perlick Residential Products in Milwaukee, WI. "Look for outdoor-specifc, UL-rated appliances that have features built in to combat common problems seen in outdoor refrigeration appliances, such as condensation on the doors and beer dis- pensers that pour foamy beer." From U-Line Corp. comes the 1215RSOD Outdoor Beverage Refrigerator, which has an overall volume of 2.9 cu. ft. and holds up to 57 12-oz. bottles or 92 cans.
