60 | Kitchen & Bath Design News January 2015 NKBA Design Competition CATEGORY: GREEN DESIGN CATEGORY: UNIVERSAL DESIGN CATEGORY: BUILDER/REMODELER HONORARY AWARD This green kitchen by Adrienne Dorig Leland, CKD, of Dorig Designs in Eau Claire, WI, exudes an abundance of rustic charm and showcases repurposed materials. The designer started with cabinetry fashioned from old wormy chestnut shelves recycled from a warehouse and built by a local cabinet shop. The stained glass inserts in the cabinet doors, discovered in a local salvage shop, are from an Arts and Crafts home. And, the booth seats are created from old pews, with the table made from old silo wood. A clearly defned work zone features an Energy Star-rated Big Chill refrigerator and KitchenAid dishwasher, as well as an energy-saving induction cooktop and Big Chill oven in soft blue. Energy consumption in the room was also reduced by switching from fuorescent track lighting to LED can lights and undercabinet lighting. An apron-front farmhouse sink and fossil art from Green River Stone add to the room's natural appeal. Pamela Livingston-Hardy of Creative Renovations in Birmingham, MI, was charged with the task of creating a kitchen with Universal Design elements for a client with Muscular Dystrophy and his wife. The 200-sq.- ft. kitchen area gained a 240-sq.-ft. addition, which allowed for a clear sight line and ample turning radius for the client's motorized scooter. The clean-lined, cream-colored cabinets feature a 9-1/2" toe kick, glass-front upper cabinets for easy interior identifcation and oversized, D-shaped cabinet handles. An open area under the shallow, 5-1/2" kitchen sink basin with a recessed drain pipe yields a 12"-deep knee space. A 36"-wide opening is found under the cooktop and also at the prep area in the island, which also features a faucet for pot flling, front-mounted cooktop and vent controls, and 12"-deep cabinets around the outside for easy access to storage. Appliance placement also allows the husband and wife to work together, with two ovens – one with a side-opening door – and elevated dishwasher. Asian-inspired, pavilion-style architecture is showcased in this bath design by Sandra Gjesdahl and Scott Gjesdahl of Bristol Design & Construction, in Lynnwood, WA, which maintains the Pacifc Northwest longhouse details. Seating is the unusual element in this bath, with a sitting area next to the freestanding, contemporary slipper tub as well as at the base of the plumbing column. The column, wrapped in textured glass accent tile in a soft blue/green, features the shower fttings on one side and the tub fttings on the other. A partially glass-enclosed shower adds to the overall open, minimalistic feel of the space. An elongated light wood vanity coordinates with the wood in the rest of the room, including an Afromosia wood valence above the vanity that conceals a track that holds the pendant lights. Frosted glass windows provide natural light as well as privacy. Photo: James Netz Photography LLC Photos: A-Medley Photography Photo: Roland Hardy
