56 | Kitchen & Bath Design News January 2015 NKBA Design Competition CATEGORY: POWDER ROOM (sink and toilet required, no tub or shower) Powder rooms are often a place where homeowners can truly express their own unique style, and this powder room by Roshele Allison, CKD, CBD, and co-designer Eric Gedney of NW Home Designers in Mercer Island, WA, does not disappoint. The clients here are scuba divers, and they requested a room that would be a refection of their undersea adventures. Tile with an aquatic pattern was installed, creating a cascading efect to give the illusion of fowing water. A recycled ocean blue glass countertop yields a glow that resembles a refecting pool, topped by an understated clear vessel bowl. The countertop lights up automatically via a motion sensor, greeting guests as they enter the space. A dark-stained cherry slab panel door cabinet anchors the space. Designer Sheena Hammond, along with co-designers Erica Westeroth, CKD, CAPS, ARIDO and Tim Scott of XTC Design Inc. in Toronto, ON, Canada, brought elements from adjoining spaces into this powder room design. The open-plan kitchen, breakfast room and family room showcase infuences from Frank Lloyd Wright, and the powder room is no diferent. Vertical lines are evident throughout the space, in three stacked metal horizontal sconces above the wall-mounted toilet as well as the linear vertical ladder detail on the opposite side of the mirror. Horizontal stacked bands of solid surfacing in a smoky gray extend past the contrasting light wood vanity, creating interesting overhangs. A chrome waterfall-style faucet blends into the oversized vertical mirror, providing a waterfall efect. A freeform sink adds to the overall organic feel. The powder room is often considered the jewel of a home, and a "pretty little jewel box" is just what the client asked for – and received – with this space. Leslie Lamarre, CKD, CID, along with co-designer Erika Shjefo, CID, of TRG Architects in Burlingame, CA, created this space out of an inefcient pass-through connecting the kitchen and dining room. A natural walnut vanity features a softly curved front, and is topped with Calcutta marble and hammered nickel vessel sink. A wall-mount faucet extends from the custom backsplash and showcases crystal spindles that coordinate with the faceted crystal knobs featured on the cabinet. A beveled glass, stone-framed mirror, small chandelier and mirror-backed wall sconces provide additional bling and add a touch of sparkle. An upholstered door teams up with the shine of Romo's Kimura wallpaper for a distinctive, one-of-a-kind aesthetic. Photo: Sam VanFleet Photos: Bernard André Photography Photo: Arnal Photography
