54 | Kitchen & Bath Design News January 2015 CATEGORY: SMALL BATHROOM (less than 55 square feet) By Anita Shaw NKBA Design Competition Clean and minimal is the statement in this bath by Erica Westeroth, CKD, CAPS, ARIDO and co-designer Sheena Hammond of XTC Design Inc. in Toronto, ON, Canada. Clean lines, tapered shapes and creative storage make this small bath work larger. Full-width vanity drawer fronts hide ofset interior drawer boxes, which make the most of the interior space around plumbing. A void stud cavity space between the bathroom and bedroom made room for a recessed 48" lift-up medicine cabinet that sports a mirrored front. Vertical mosaic tile behind the toilet elongates the space and continues onto the back wall of the adjoining shower. The shower alcove includes a minimal curb with linear drain, fnished in large rectangular white tile. An angled bench completes the shower space. Tapered light fxtures, rectangular sink and angled hardware add to the clean lines throughout. The timeless neutral color palette of whites and tans is anything but ordinary in this master bath design by Alena Capra, CKD, CBD of Alena Capra Designs in Dania Beach, FL. Classic materials such as polished Diana Royale marble are used on the foors and walls, and a modern basket weave stone border topped with a beveled marble pencil liner adds interest. Complementing the basket weave border, shower fxtures, faucets and even lighting have a modern, squared-of design. The shower area also features a corner seat and recessed niches for toiletries. Crema marfl countertops with a beveled edge coordinate with the pencil lines along the tile, and blend elegantly with the overall color scheme. Small details, include crystal knobs on the white vanity and decorative magnifying makeup mirror, complete the space. Adrienne Dorig Leland, CKD, of Dorig Designs in Eau Claire, WI, provided the clients with this small bath project with more space and better efciency through clever design. Space was cramped in the original bath, which featured a clawfoot tub set at an angle that limited the door swing, as well as a short ceiling and lack of storage. Replacing the tub with a curbless shower immediately opened up the room visually, and a pocket door saved additional space. The rustic yet modern farmhouse dictated the look of the room, which was fnished with weathered lumber-look tile on three walls and the foor. The white wall-mounted toilet has its tank built inside the wall, saving space in both the room and on the foor. A white medicine cabinet, white subway tile and white semi- recessed sink brighten the space against the dark tile. Beneath the sink, a wormy chestnut vanity with 9"-high concrete top adds to the rustic charm while providing storage.
