52 | Kitchen & Bath Design News January 2015 NKBA Design Competition CATEGORY: LARGE KITCHEN (more than 350 square feet) Proving that one exceptional piece can inspire an entire kitchen design, Brigitte Fabi, CMKBD, of Drury Design Kitchen & Bath Studio in Glen Ellyn, IL, took cues from a Moroccan antique door that the homeowners had brought back from a trip to Marrakesh. Moroccan details are infused throughout the kitchen, most prominently in the Moorish arch around the range area, which was created using a laser cutout of the shape and covered with a dimensional vein-cut marble. Moorish textures and furniture styling are also refected in the banquette, which features a sofa and eight seats. Walnut cabinetry warms the space, and seeded glass inset doors add character. A hammered mirrored range hood coordinates with a similar textured apron-front sink, and creamy countertops team well with rugged mosaic stone tile. A custom refrigerator/freezer door features glass panels with hand-etched designs for a distinctive look. A distinctive, formal design was the order for this kitchen, and Peter Ross Salerno, CMKBD, along with co-designers Julie Connors and Robert So of Peter Salerno, Inc. in Wyckof, NJ, delivered. The designers incorporated products from around the globe to give this design its distinctive look. The range wall has several focal points, including blue La Cornue stove, a reclaimed tin hood, two curio cabinets and a 2-1/4"-thick concrete countertop with silver gray fnish to match the hood. A creamy mosaic tile backsplash coordinates with the cream of the cabinets, which showcase dramatic oversized drawer pulls. Two 100' islands in a soft blue are embellished with extensive wood detailing, and topped with soft neutral-toned counters. One island includes a cooktop and prep sink, while the other houses a wine refrigerator with seating on the opposite side. Original interior walls were removed to provide space for a full refrigerator and freezer as well as open up the space to a family room through a paneled archway. A detailed rosette ceiling in the center of the room features inset antique mirrors framed in acanthus leaf moldings. The center ceiling medallion is anchored by a blue crystal chandelier. Rarely does a kitchen design draw inspiration from a fairy tale, but Elina Katsioula-Beall, CKD, of DeWitt Designer Kitchens in Pasadena, CA, created this dream kitchen with the client's favorite Alice in Wonderland in mind. The lighthearted design works for the client, who wanted a kitchen that was equipped for painting, sculpting, baking and decorating cakes. Katsioula- Beall, along with co-designer Maria Alaverdyan, started with white cabinets and counters and added pops of color throughout. Walls were removed to open up the space, which now features a triangular kitchen with two peninsulas jutting from the oven and refrigeration walls. The prep and cook peninsula includes a small sink and cooktop, while the peninsula next to the oven acts as a baking and decorating center. The back wall of the kitchen triangle includes the refrigerator, double ovens, warming drawer and microwave. A fuchsia baker's hutch features open shelving and houses a bakeware collection. Fuchsia is also the featured color on a focal wall, which showcases recycled oval glass tile. An eating area with expanding glass table adds function and whimsy to the space.
