44 | Kitchen & Bath Design News August 2014 Creative Countertop Designs ⊕ The reclaimed chestnut island countertop from The Grothouse Lumber Co. makes a statement in this kitchen design by Blue Bell Kitchens. Featuring a fat grain with Durata permanent fnish in satin, this countertop sits on fush inset painted cabinets in a soft white. "This open foor plan shore home feels cozy, with the soft white cabinetry and the warmth of the island's rustic reclaimed chestnut countertop," notes Lynne Kaltman. Honed Calcutta gold marble is used on the perimeter surface. ⊕ An eclectic mix of materials was used throughout this adobe home-kitchen remodel by Cheryl Hamilton Gray, CKD of Hamilton-Gray Design in Carlsbad, CA. "We used a Silestone Haiku Volcano texture engineered quartz surface from Cosentino on the kitchen perimeters in a solid color with a textured fnish, while on the island we installed an earth- toned granite on the working surface," Hamilton-Gray notes. A shapely, solid walnut counter provides the eating surface. ⊕ This hacienda-style kitchen by Cheryl Hamilton-Gray, CKD of Hamilton-Gray Design in Carlsbad, CA features three surfaces on the working island. A Calypso granite with a chiseled edge acts as the main prep surface, and a marble-topped custom furniture piece is featured at one end of the island. A pre-worn butcher block counter and custom base sits at the other end of the island. "The counter provides surfaces that are appropriate to the tasks at hand and convenient in the multiple-cook kitchen," notes Hamilton-Gray.
