54 | Kitchen & Bath Design News February 2014 By Anita Shaw Special Report K itchen and bath de- sig ners a re bei ng challenged to think outside the box more than ever these days because they are working with clients who are rarely focused on one specific design style any- more. For example while a client may lean toward want- ing a contemporary design, he or she might also look to incorporate more traditional pieces to warm the space. In the same vein, clients who opt for natural woods and stones are pairing them with modern, clean-lined ele- ments to keep the room from being too rustic. Interesting combinations from diferent design styles were seen throughout the kitchen and bathrooms cho- sen as fnalists for the 2014 NKBA Design Competition. Edgy with elegant, modern with retro, bling with neutral were common pairings in the designs given top honors by the judges for the National Kitchen & Bath Association's annual contest. For k itchen s, pa i nted cabinet s in muted tones were popular, but wood fn- ishes in interesting patterns and textures were defnitely grabbing attention, as were l ighter-hued woods. T he mix of elements was every- where, with sleek modern cabinets paired with wood countertops, throwback light- ing and apron-front sinks. And, when more traditional cabinetry was used, sleek faucets, hoods and stainless appliances took center stage. Pops of rich colors did make a n appea ra nce, but usu- ally on changeable surfaces such as walls and artwork. Decorative hardware defi- nitely showed its importance, dressing each of the spaces in everything from contempo- rary stainless to Old World oil-rubbed bronze. W h i le bat h room s re - t u r ned to more neut ra l tones, the spaces were far from boring. Glass tiles in rich jewel tones added just the right sparkle to many designs, and sinks, mirrors and decorat ive elements in copper, wood and stone made natural elements an important part of the design.
