Industry Update { Noteworthy developments impacting the kitchen and bath market } Ceramics of Italy Names Winners Of Annual Tile Competition Atlanta, GA — This year, the Ceramics of Italy Tile Competition, an annual awards program sponsored by Confndustria Ceramica (the Italian Association of Ceramics) and the Italian Trade Commission, attracted the most competitive pool of projects in the contest's history, according to the organizations. The submissions – from prominent North American architects and designers in the Residential, Institutional and Commercial categories – displayed both their architectonic qualities and creative use of Italian ceramic tile. On the occasion of the competition's 20th anniversary, as well as the Anno della Cultura Italiana ("Year of Italian Culture"), the international jury recognized more projects this year, honoring them with a special anniversary award. The recipients of this prize were ofcially announced during the Ceramics of Italy International Press Conference at Coverings, held in late April for the frst time at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. Each of the winning architects and designers were awarded $4,000 and a fve-day trip to Bologna, Italy to attend Cersaie 2013 – the international exhibition of ceramic tile and bathroom furnishings – in the fall. Ceramics of Italy also awarded $1,000 to be shared by the contractors and distributors involved in each winning project. The winner in the Residential category was MRSA Architects & Planners, with honorable mentions going to DEN Architecture and Anna Marie Fanelli. HDR Architecture was the award winner for the Institutional segment, with Jain Malkin receiving an honorable mention. In the Commercial category, the winner was SHoP Architects, with honorable mentions going to Sergio Mannino Studio, KNA Design and RMW Architecture and Interiors. Natural Stone App Released by MIA Cleveland, OH — Marble Institute of America, in partnership with studiomarmo, an Italian expert on natural stone graphic and Web design, has announced the release of iStone, a natural stone swatch application designed for the iPad, iPhone and iPod. The app, available in the Apple App Store, is presented in a 3D environment and presents images and technical information about more than 1,000 natural stones from around the world, including a search function that allows the user to flter by stone type, color, country of origin and more, according to the Cleveland, OH-based MIA. Also included is the ability to view stones in 3D and bookmatch format, as well as email capability to share images with clients, colleagues or friends, the MIA said. "The iStone app for iPhone and iPod means that you will always have your stone swatch with you," said Jim Hieb, MIA executive v.p. and CEO.
