Showcasing a wide array of colors, materials and applications, these dramatic yet highly functional islands provide fabulous focal points for the kitchen. BY KIM BERNDTSON Eye-catching Islands s the heart of the kitchen, islands are logical 'targets' for showcasing stunning design. Given their central location, islands are often a natural focus in the kitchen. However, designers often up the ante by incorporating eye-catching design elements and materials that further their focal-point status. This month, KBDN asked several designers to share kitch- en projects that not only serve as a central focus to p erform ev- eryday kitchen tasks, but that also offer eye-catching aesthetics. 'STEELING' THE LIMELIGHT The industrial, masculine vibe evident in the kitchen designed by Cindy Bayon for her bachelor client (see photo above) not only fits his personality, but also suits the historic building in which it resides. "The exterior walls that come through into the interior are the original brick walls and concrete," says the designer, of Bayon Design Studio, Tiburon, CA, in reference to the 1907 warehouse that has been converted into San Francisco's Clocktower Lofts. "We used them as part of the design. It's very intentional. Instead of covering them up, we used them to maintain the character of the building." To emphasize the established theme, Bayon designed the island to resemble a modern cart. At its base are antique wheels found at a local metal shop. "The island doesn't actual- ly move," she says, addressing the often-asked question related to mobility. "They are just for the look." The cabinets, like all of those in the kitchen, are wood sheathed in cold-rolled steel veneer, with a live finish that will patina over time.
