Editorial { Eliot Sefrin, Publisher Emeritus } A CYGNUS BUSINESS MEDIA PUBLICATION Group Publisher John Huff Trade Show Co-Location Should Provide Jolt To Industry in Recovery Publisher Emeritus Eliot Sefrin Editor Janice Anne Costa Managing Editor Anita Shaw Senior Editor Kim Berndtson Contributing Writers Elizabeth Richards Denise Vermeulen The co-location of the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) and the International Builders Show (IBS), beginning in 2014, should be seen as a potential major shot in the arm to the industrys two premier trade shows. G ood news on the trade show front. And, coupled with a recovering market, it should provide a much-needed jolt of energy for the housing industrys entire supply chain. The good news, arriving in late-January, was contained in the announcement that the National Kitchen & Bath Association and the National Association of Home Builders have forged a threeyear agreement to co-locate the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show and the International Builders Show beginning next February (see related story, Page 12). The pair of shows, to be conducted simultaneously at the Las Vegas Convention Center, will create a megaevent known as Design and Construction Week and will represent one of the worlds largest gatherings focused on the ideas, products and technologies to design, build and remodel homes. The co-location decision should be seen as a potential major shot in the arm for KBIS and IBS, both of which have languished in recent years under the weight of the housing downturn. Anyone who has visited either event is painfully aware that attendance and exhibit space has been down dra- matically from peak levels. Many manufacturers stung by exhibit booth/drayage/ travel costs, impacted by dwindling attendance, and questioning the return on investment for national trade shows have been forced in recent years to cut back on trade-show exposure and spend their marketing dollars on other initiatives. Potential tentially meet thousands of additional visitors including home builders, architects and related design/construction professionals crossing over from an accessible, adjacent IBS. Similarly, KBIS attendees should benept from the far-more-expansive roster of suppliers, not to mention gaining greater familiarity with important ancillary Show ocials for both KBIS and IBS should be commended for listening to out-of-the-box ideas, responding to customer needs and working together to forge their exciting new venture. attendees, pinched by costs in a challenging economy, have also stayed away. And because of this, both shows have been facing uncertain, shaky futures. Those futures, however, suddenly seem a whole lot brighter now. KBIS, in particular, stands to benept from the co-location decision. Prospective KBIS exhibitors should be downright giddy about a format in which they can po- products such as windows, doors, qooring and mechanical systems. KBIS attendees should also benept from the wide range of educational conferences typically oered at IBS. As if thats not enough, conducting the shows in a warm-weather destination like Las Vegas in the heart of winter shouldnt hurt, either. As if thats not positiveenough news, the co-location decision also seemingly signals a long sought-after, and Facebook.com/KitchenBathDesignNews most welcome, move toward trade-show consolidation. As additional evidence, NKBA and NAHB officials said their co-located event will expand further in 2015 with the addition of SURFACES and StonExpo/Marmomacc Americas, a pair of shows in the floor-covering and natural stone industries. And the International Surface Fabricators Association (ISFA) and the International Woodworking Fair, LLC also just announced a partnership geared toward increasing the focus for the 2014 IWF on the countertop industry (see story, Page 12). Show officials for both KBIS and IBS should be commended for listening to out-of-the-box ideas, responding to customer needs and working together to forge their exciting new venture. Both KBIS and IBS remain critical, time-tested marketing vehicles for the trade. If nothing else, the announcement about co-locating the events has created some much-needed buzz. Its hoped the decision does even more helping return the shows to at least a semblance of their former glory.
