Transformations I Photos: Casey Dunn f you work in the design industry, its hard not to be captivated by the transformation process taking an ugly, dated or poorly functioning space and making it look and work better for the client. While theres plenty of hard work involved in taking a project from conception to completion, theres something inspiring about reviewing where a space started and how it turned out. This month, KBDNs Transformations department takes a before and after view of a kitchen expansion project that incorporates both aesthetic and functional improvements. t After Before The kitchen in this Austin, TX-based custom home, built in 1995, was getting a bit dated, and the owners also wanted to expand the space and reconpgure it to be more suited for their love of entertaining. However, a major challenge to any kind of expansion was the fact that the second qoor was supported by the prst qoor kitchen walls. COMPANY CIRCLE NO. PAGE Mark Audino, v.p. of Austin, TX-based Audino Construction , Inc. began by bumping out the kitchen into the rear yard and capturing a section of the existing side patio, using a 25'-long steel I beam to carry the second qoor load where the kitchen walls were removed and bumped out. The extra space allowed for plenty of extra storage, and this was accomplished with Downsview cabinetry with three dierent pnishes: the Tania Door style with a glossy lacquer, Moda door style using Ambassador Oak and Tania door style with glossy lacquer & stainless steel. The island and perimeter cabinetry is complemented with 3cm Silestone by Cosentino leather grey Amazon with a qat hone pnish and 3cm chocolate brown granite with qat polish (on the larger island). A mosaic travertine backsplash adds an interesting textural element, and complements the Kohler sinks and Grohe LadyLux plumbing pxture with air switch disposal. The right appliances are critical for anyone who likes to entertain, so the clients decided on a stainless steel package including a 48" KitchenAid refrigerator, two KitchenAid dishwashers, a Sharp microwave drawer, Thermador double ovens and cooktop, and a U-Line ice maker and beverage center. LED can lighting and LED under cabinet tape lighting provide both task and ambient lighting, making food prep easier, while three Hubbardton Forge pendants over the small island and a Varaluz Lighting pxture over the larger island add decorative accents. The end result is a spacious kitchen with a good qow that is perfect for entertaining. CIRCLE NO.
