Cheever Design Library Dedicated at VT BLACKSBURG, VA — Virginia Tech's Center for Real Life Design, a major resource for college students majoring in residential design, has dedicated a portion of its library to the contributions and career of Ellen Cheever, CMKBD, ASID, CAPS. The Ellen Cheever Kitchen and Bath Collection 1971-2018, a collection of Cheever's publications and professional resources, was dedicated last month to the Cheever Design Library, a new space designed by Cheever (see related Editorial, Page 7). A presentation, gallery exhibit, reception and dedication of the space took place in honor of Cheever's career and contributions to kitchen/bath design and education. Plain & Fancy Custom Cabinetry, Hafele America and DuPont Corian were among the corporate suppliers contributing to the library, whose dedication was spearheaded by Virginia Tech professors Dr. Julia Beamish and Dr. Kathleen Parrott. "I've known Ellen Cheever for most of the 35 years since the launch of Kitchen & Bath Design News, and no one I know deserves the honor of having her career me- morialized more than she," said KBDN Publisher Emeritus Eliot Sefrin, who attended the ceremonies. "For four-plus decades, Ellen has forged a matchless legacy in the kitchen and bath design trade, enlightening, inspiring and elevating the industry as a designer, author, educator, consultant, businesswoman and thought leader," Sefrin observed. "No one I know is more knowledgeable, multi-talented and committed to kitchen and bath design and education, or has helped raise kitchens and baths to an unmatched level of prominence in the American home. No one has done more to raise the bar of professionalism in the kitchen and bath trade. No one has touched the lives of as many design professionals, or contributed to the industry in a more meaningful, lasting way." Aside from her achievements as the head of her award-winning, Wilmington, DE-based residential design firm, Cheever has authored more than 20 books and manuals on kitchen and bath design, and created a wide range of CEU programs on space planning, project management, product specification and related topics. Since 2002, she has also served as a contributor to Kitchen & Bath Design News, for which she's written dozens of articles and created a multi-year seminar series melding cutting-edge design techniques with profit-making business-management strategies. The Center for Real Life Design, a focal point for Virginia Tech's four-year curric- ulum in residential environments and design, affords students, professionals and researchers a resource center for exploring residential design and technologies. As a contribution to the Cheever Design Library, Kitchen & Bath Design News and its parent company, SOLA Group, donated bound copies of all the feature articles Cheever published in KBDN. "In and of themselves, these articles comprise a virtual kitchen and bath design curriculum," Sefrin said. "I hope those same articles, bound together in a single volume, can enrich the educational efforts of Virginia Tech students and educators as much as they've done for KBDN readers." 2020 Taps Contest Design Winners LAVAL, QUEBEC — 2020 Design us- ers were asked to submit their most inspiring spaces built with 2020 Design as part of the company's 2018 design competition.
