Islands are often the figurative and physical focus of any kitchen design, making them an ideal place to showcase aesthetics as well as function. BY KIM BERNDTSON Making a Statement eographically speaking, the word 'island' often con- jures up images of isolation and separation. However, as part of a kitchen floor plan, an island – although physically detached from other elements within the space – is actually the element that brings the space and its inhabitants together. The kitchen island, which generally does double duty as a workspace and gathering area, has increasingly become the focal point of the kitchen. This month KBDN asked several designers to share projects that showcase islands with both aesthetic and practical appeal. NO HOLDS BARRED As professionals in the food service industry, Bob Burmeister's clients understand the value of functionality within a kitchen. However, they also appreciate aesthetics, and as such, they gave the designer free rein to create a kitchen with color, style and a free-formed feel. At its heart is a pair of islands, one centrally located with a unique kidney shape and the other defining the kitchen's perimeter. "This was a really fun project," says Burmeister, owner/ designer, Marc Christian Fine Cabinetry, in St. Louis, MO. G 80 Kitchen & Bath Design News • August 2018
