The kitchen's sizeable outline is combined with a tall ceiling height. "The cabinets are 48" tall, giving us plenty of space for decorative tile behind the range as well as the sink," she says, noting its color tones help unify the space. "The mosaics also break up the space, making it feel more comfort- able compared to a massive sheet of tile." Hernstrom also had to give extensive con- sideration to appliance placement. "They had a lot of appliances they wanted to incorporate," she notes. "It was important to make them flow, rather than just having the kitchen look like an appliance display." As such, she symmetrically flanked the sink with two dishwashers. She was also challenged to locate a 15"-wide electric Wolf cooktop. "She wanted a place to simmer a pot of soup all day so she wouldn't need to have the gas range on so long," she says. "We placed it underneath a window, next to the [Wolf ] range, rather than in an island or seating area." While paneling appliances could have pre- vented the display phenomenon, maintaining their stainless steel exteriors was important to the design. "They wanted a transitional style, so it's nice to have the stainless steel appliances visible," she concludes. ▪ The butler's-pantry-turned-bar was designed with the husband in mind. 'We wanted to make it a little more masculine than the kitchen,' Hernstrom says. She included Candlelight Cabinetry maple cabinets in White Pewter to match the kitchen, but added Cambria Black quartz countertops in a leathered finish. The KitchenAid dishwasher and refrigerator work well when hosting visitors. Most visitors initially view the kitchen from this vantage point, which showcases all three colors used throughout the space. Designer Rachel Hernstrom used 20/20 software to play around with the placement of color elements to get just the right balance. Circle No. 23 on Product Card We make the difference for designers.
