FILLING THE LARGE FOOTPRINT While Hernstrom's design talents were put to task creating an aesthetically pleasing layout with multiple colors, additional challenges included beautifully filling the large footprint. "With larger rooms, you can easily find yourself just filling it with cabinets," she says. "But the homeowners wanted to ensure every single detail was considered, giving each area a purpose or use, such as a prep area, clean-up area, coffee station, etc. Once each purpose was identified, we gave the cabinetry a furni- ture-style look, rather than simply being wall and base cabinets." Two islands fill the center void, one for working and one for entertaining. The work-focused island features a natural Walnut butcher block top and prep sink and is home to a KitchenAid compactor and double waste- basket cabinet. The second island includes two KitchenAid refrigerator drawers – to provide easy access for the kids – and is topped with Cambria Bellingham quartz to match the pe- rimeter countertops. "The white cabinetry is almost the color of white chocolate and is mixed with white crown moulding/trim and greige walls, which are also used throughout the house," says Hernstrom. "The quartz has a little more gray and swirls of other colors to pull all of it together." A large footprint also gave Hernstrom the ability to create a custom 'hutch' that she showcased with the walnut cabinetry.
