space, you immediately see that wall of win- dows with the white and contrasting black. It's a great view!" These countertop cabinets also add addi- tional 'weight' to balance the adjoining wall that includes an integrated 36" Thermador refrig- erator and 48" range, which is highlighted by a custom ventilation hood and Best insert. "There are a lot of appliances in a small space, so it was tricky to incorporate them all while keeping everything balanced," she says, drawing particular attention to the black exteri- or. "The refrigerator was a big block of black as well as the hood. I felt we needed the 'weight' of the cabinets on the sink wall to provide balance. We experimented with traditional wall cabinets, but it felt like they were hanging in the middle of nowhere, so we brought them down to the counter to give them some mass and balance everything that was going on with the adjoining wall." Holmes topped the dark cabinetry with con- trasting gleaming white Silestone Lyra counter- tops from Cosentino. "Black absorbs so much light," she says. "The countertops help keep everything light because they bounce light from the windows. She also entertains, and while she likes the look of marble, she didn't want the upkeep and maintenance associated with it." White tongue-and-groove paneling sheathes the walls throughout the entire frst foor. "There is a lot of white, so it can handle all of the black cabinets," she notes. European larch wood covers the foor. "Its warm, golden brown color keeps the space from feeling too heavy," she concludes. SERENE STUDY IN CONTRASTS While the kitchen exudes a very traditional design style, the home- owners wanted to mix it up a bit with the master bath, so Holmes gave it a more transitional feel, starting with porcelain stone foor tiles laid in a diagonal pattern. The designer chose two colors – Crossville Fog and Clay – in two fnishes to add interest. "The foor is a little funky," she says. "It's fun to mix in a diferent look." A custom Brookhaven by Wood-Mode vanity features a Vintage Lace fnish and is topped with Cambria's Devon quartz countertop and accented with a Kohler Artifacts faucet in a brushed bronze fnish. Brass hardware is carried into this space to provide continuity with the rest of the house. Holmes designed the vanity with open shelves to keep the space light. Casa Dolce Casa mosaic glass tile covers the shower, while brass plumbing fxtures and sconces round out the design.
