Thermador Opens Design Challenge IRVINE, CA — To help Thermador launch its 100th anniversary celebration in 2016, the brand is kicking of its third Kitchen Design Challenge. The contest recognizes inspiring luxury Thermador kitchens, and this year's challenge – in recognition of the brand's centennial celebration – features more prizes and opportunities. "For a century, Thermador has been devoted to creating innovative applianc- es that provide ultimate performance for culinary enthusiasts – and we have been an integral part of how the design and function of the kitchen has evolved over the decades," said Zach Elkin, direc- tor of brand marketing for Thermador. "Our commitment to the Kitchen De- sign Challenge enables us to celebrate the talented designers who utilize Thermador to bring the heart of the home to life for their clients." A total of 32 regional winners will be selected, and of these, 24 will re- ceive a $1,000 cash prize, while eight regional honorable mention winners will receive $500 for the best overall use of Thermador appliances in their kitchen design. All regional winners will also re- ceive a trip for two to a Gala Celebration in 2017 to compete for national prizes. The national winners will be selected in the following categories: • Best Use of Thermador Refrigeration – one national winner will receive a $10,000 grand prize, and a sec- ond-place winner will receive a $5,000 prize • Contemporary/Modern Design – one national winner will receive a $20,000 grand prize, and a sec- ond-place winner will receive a $10,000 prize • Traditional/Transitional Design – one national winner will receive a $20,000 grand prize, and a sec- ond-place winner will receive a $10,000 prize • Designer's Choice – two regional winners will be selected by the Gala Celebration attendees to receive a $3,500 prize The contest is open to designers, builders, architects and other trade professionals. Entries may only consist of kitchens featuring Thermador appli- ances and must have been completed between January 1, 2014 and Decem - ber 31, 2016. All submissions must be entered by January 31, 2017. There is no limit to the number of entries submitted by a single person, team or company. To read the ofcial rules and enter, visit: www.thermador.com/designcontest. 2016 Seminar Series Moves to San Francisco WILMETTE, IL — San Francisco will be the location this month for the second program in the latest seminar series being brought to the nation's design trade by Kitchen & Bath Design News. KBDN's 2016 educational initiative – "Client Engagement Strategies for Today's Evolving Market" – made its debut last month in Atlanta. The second program in the series will take place March 22 at the Embassy Suites San Francisco Airport- Waterfront hotel, in the San Francisco suburb of Burlingame, CA. The seminar series will see KBDN brought "live" to eight key markets through an in-depth program aimed at enhanc- ing the client-engagement skills of kitchen/bath dealers, designers and related professionals. The program will feature a pair of experienced industry educators delivering content created by Ellen Cheever, CMKBD, ASID, CAPS, widely con- sidered the industry's leading design authority. Among the topics to be addressed will be how both traditional and virtual showrooms are undergoing a revolu- tionary change, with the advent of new digital tools, including kitchen/bath-related apps, smart phones, mobile devices, augmented reality, and powerful new software. Aside from this month's event in San Francisco, 2016 seminars are scheduled for April 21 in St. Louis, May 25 in Boston, June 28 in Minneapolis, Sept. 21 in Denver, Oct. 19 in Chicago, and Nov. 9 in Seattle. Corporate sponsors who have committed to support the seminars include Broan, Geberit, Jenn-Air, Rev-A-Shelf, Showplace Wood Products and Wellborn Forest Products, according to Eliot Sefrin, publisher emeritus of KBDN. Presenters will be Jennifer Gilmer, CKD, and Eric Schimelpfenig, AKBD. Milan to Showcase Salone de Mobile and Eurocucina Next Month MILAN, ITALY — Salone del Mobile.Milano 2016 is sched- uled to take place from April 12-17, 2016 at the Rho Milan Fairgrounds, in Milan, Italy. The show, celebrating its 55th edition, is a global platform for the latest in home furnishings. Held along with the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition, the event will features over 1,300 exhibitors, with 300,000+ visitors from 165 countries expected to attend. The biennial EuroCucina and its collateral exhibition FTK (Technology For the Kitchen) will be part of the event – in Pavilions 9-11 and 13-15 – along with the International Bath- room Exhibition in Pavilions 22-24. EuroCucina will showcase many of the latest products for high-quality kitchens. FTK specializes in built-in appliances and hoods, presenting the latest technology for cooking and living in the kitchen space to the fullest. The focus at the International Bathroom Exhibition will be on cutting-edge bathroom furniture and accessories, shower cubicles and saunas, sanitary ware, radiators and coverings, bathroom and/or kitchen taps, baths and hy- dromassage tubs. Baldwin Hardware Hosts 70th Anniversary Celebration READING, PA — Baldwin Hardware celebrated its 70th anniversary during an event at the Mandarin Hotel Ballroom in Las Vegas in January. Held in conjunction with Design and Construction Week, the event gathered hundreds of people to celebrate Baldwin's history and witness the unveiling of the company's 70th Anniversary Commemorative Knob. The winning knob design, which was submitted by Ileana LaFontaine of di Domenico + Partners as part of a com- petition, features an abstract design of seven engraved rings – each representing a decade of Baldwin's history – encasing a 70 in the center of the knob. Baldwin also honored three Inspired Design Award Winners for their submissions to the 70th Anniversary Commemorative Knob Design Competition: Dale Bugner of DesignBridge in Chicago, IL; Carol Kurth, FAIA of Carol Kurth Architecture & Interiors in Bedford, NY, and Isaac Pollan and Lindsay Crozier of MADE Architecture in Brooklyn, NY.
