34 | Kitchen & Bath Design News | November 2015 Fall Bath Remodeling Report Besides its small footprint, what are the biggest chal- lenges associated with designing a powder room? "Making sure you can have it all," says Rodman. "What- ever the client would like to have in a small space, I try to give them." "Despite it being a smaller space, there's usually a lot going on in a powder room, and sometimes it can be a chal- lenge to make sure the whole design works together," says Toleno Van't Hull. "From plumbing fxtures to lighting to mirrors to wall coverings, there are many items that need to complement this whole room." What do you fnd most exciting about designing a powder room? "Since it's a smaller space and people only go to visit, it's a room where clients are willing to be bold and take chances," says Rodman. "I always show clients designs that are a little more risky!" "There are really no rules when designing a powder room," adds Toleno Van't Hull. "You aren't ever compet- ing with furnishings, so this is the perfect room to take the opportunity to do something fun and unexpected. The sky's the limit!" What is your favorite design tip for powder rooms? "Have fun with your selections," says Rodman. "The bones can be timeless but the accents – like wallpaper, paint, cabinet hardware and accessories – don't have to be." "It can be very easy for a powder bath to be boring, so don't be afraid to be bold," says Toleno Van't Hull. "Always make sure to do something fun and unexpected." What are some 'must-have' elements to include in a pow- der room? "I love to add wallpaper," says Rodman. "Since it is a small space, it doesn't have to break the budget and it adds so much pop. I also think the correct mirror style and lighting are key to the design." "I always like to add a fun light fxture," notes Toleno Van't Hull. "Using a bold paint color, featuring an interest- ing mirror or displaying a favorite piece of art is also great for a powder room." Martha O'Hara Interiors; Minneapolis, MN Carrie Rodman was challenged to fnd some extra storage in this powder bath since there is none in the sink area. Her solution was to add shelving over the toilet. "This client had great, bold taste and trusted us to fnd some wallpaper options that worked with her existing antique rug," says Rebecca Toleno Van't Hull. "This specifc wallpaper was pulled to feature and show of her favorite color in the rug." Photo: Troy Thies Photography Photo: Corey Gaffer Photography
