November 2015 | KitchenBathDesign.com | 33 Aside from its small footprint, what are the biggest chal- lenges in designing a powder room? "A big challenge with powder rooms is to maximize the space while maintaining aesthetics. There is also always a need for storage. Although it may not be to the extent of a master bath, you will always need a place for toilet paper, aspirin and hand towels." What is most exciting about designing a powder room? "A powder room is a space where clients can let their hair down and have fun with color or wallpaper. Since no one spends a tremendous amount of time in a powder room, you can make it a fun, bright color. It's also a great place to put a really cool sink. People are usually willing to spend a little more on fxtures because it's a place guests will see." What is your favorite design tip for powder rooms? "If you have the ability to use an in-wall toilet, do so because it saves some space within the room. It also takes away the visual of the toilet a bit. There are some new designs where you can create a ledge and place the button on top of it instead of on the wall. This afords an opportunity to change the plane and materials, plus it gives you a ledge for a few toiletries." What are some 'must-have' elements for any powder room? "Incorporate clever storage. It's easy to put in a standard cabinet with a drawer, but a powder room afords you the opportunity to do something diferent. "Another 'must-have' is a fun finish…either an elegant wallpaper or pop of color. In our showroom, we created wallpaper out of canvas. We used it on a 2' section of a wall, then turned the corner and did an- other 2'. Then we took a drop of water and magnifed it 400 times." "We wanted to have some fun in the room, and the silk wallpaper with an exaggerated feur de lis pattern matches beautifully with the dark chocolate furnishings." This bath, designed by Colette Rodon Hornof and her partner Bill Rodon Hornof, utilizes a combination of materials – including a wood and glass foor and a textural stone wall – that plays against the contemporary materials of the pedestal sink and in-wall toilet. Rodon Hornof added storage by creating a ledge between the mirror and stone wall. In this sleek, contemporary bath, Colette Rodon Hornof incorporated clever storage behind the mirror and pedestal sink. "We pulled the wall forward about 6" and tucked some storage shelves of to the right side. Guests can easily access the contents, but they aren't obvious." Rodon Hornof also added interest by utilizing a number of horizontal and vertical lines. Photo: Steve Somen Photography
