November 2015 | KitchenBathDesign.com | 27 sons from Ho's experience designing for her heavily Asian clientele: » » It's all about family! There's almost always an island, often planned for multi-purposing. In the morning, quick breakfasts help to get everyone on the road. In the afternoon, the kids do their homework. On weekends, the extend- ed family gathers to prep meals together, with the island becoming a bufet. » » Durability and low mainte- nance are key in material selection. Some look for ease of cleaning so that everything can be wiped down after some heavy- duty wok cooking. Others look for non-porous ma- terials so that the richly colored spices can be eas- ily wiped away. » » Multiple cooking surfaces are very desirable. One, these allow for different types of cooking. Two, when the extended fami- lies are over, everyone can cook and not get in each ot her's way! Ever yone comes in looking for a big gas cooktop with the high- est output possible. But the designer has also pointed some in the way of induc- tion cooking to be more energy efcient and to al- low for speedier cooking. » » Every culture has a richly immersed bathing ritual. I get a lot of requests for Japanese-style baths where the shower and the tub are one continuously enclosed wet area. Many Asians have been heavily inspired by their hot spring pilgrim- ages in Japan. Naturally, they want to bring some of those elements home with them. This means lots of nature-inspired shapes and forms. Equally important are clean lines and ease of cleaning. Yim, adds these thoughts: » » A spacious kitchen with plenty of pantry space and a large refrigerator with freezer at the bottom is preferred. Asian Americans tend to have larger households with multiple generations living togeth- er. Sometimes parents visiting from the home country stay for months. » » A powerful exhaust fan is desired because many dishes are stir fried in Chinese food, and there is a lot of deep-fried food in Asian Indian cuisine. A standard hood with a micro-oven at the top is often not adequate to meet Asian Americans' cooking needs. www.blanco-one.com With 3 sinks in 3 sizes and inspired accessories to choose from, you can create the ultimate experience in your clients' kitchens.
