10 | Kitchen & Bath Design News | June 2015 Consumer Buying Trends { Demographics & buying patterns for the home } Palo Alto, CA — Showers will make a big splash this year, with more than two thirds of the homeowners remodeling their master bath increasing the size of their shower. At the same time, when it comes to trends in the bath, personalized features abound – from showers for two and chandeliers to towel warmers and bidets – and recycling is clearly in style. Those are among the key fndings of the second annual Houzz "Bathroom Trends Report," derived from a survey among nearly 3,200 homeowners who recently completed, are currently plan- ning, or are in the midst of a bathroom remodel. According to the Palo Alto, CA- based Houzz, a major online platform for home remodeling and design, 67% of the remodeling consumers surveyed for the 2015 Bath Trends Report say they will increase the size of their shower, with nearly one-third increasing the size by half or more. Houzz also found that, de- spite increases to the shower, the majority of master and other full baths are main- taining their existing footprint (71% and 82%, respectfully). "Bathroom remodels rival kitchens in popularity, and are the second most expensive room in the home for reno- vations," said Nino Sitchinava, principal economist at Houzz. "As a result, when looking at upgrades and upgrade fre- quency, we are seeing very similar motivations for both bathroom and kitchen remodels, such as fnally having the means to pay for the project." According to Houzz, many home- owners are personalizing their master baths with features like showers for two (25%), chandeliers (15%), bidets (5%) and TVs (5%). Homeowners are also creating cozy spaces with radiant heat fooring (26%), towel warmers (11%) and steam showers (3%). In line with the aging-in-place trend, Baby Boomers are incorporating ac- cessibility features during master bath upgrades, Houzz also noted. Boomers are three times more likely to install grab bars and nearly two times more likely to have curbless showers in their master baths than younger generations. Additional trends in the master bath include: » » Adding sinks: Nearly two thirds of homeowners will have two sinks in their master bathrooms post-remod- el (65%), up from 55% in the 2014 Houzz survey. In the South, 3% of homeowners report installing three or more sinks. » » Renovating with recycled materials: Homeowners in the West are most likely to use recycled materials during master bathroom renovations (28%) versus just 17% of those in the North- east, Houzz reported. Three-in-fve homeowners are recycling or donat- ing old bathroom fxtures (62%), with the West leading the charge (66%). » » Bringing in the light: Good lighting is a key function for half of the home- owners undertaking or contemplating bath remodels, Houzz said. In the master bath, recessed lighting (61%) and wall sconces (60%) top lists, but unique features such as chandeliers and pendant lights are also popular (15% and 12%, respectively). Millen- nials are more than twice as likely as other generations to install romantic lighting in the master bath (11% ver- sus 5%, respectively). The Houzz survey also found that powder rooms are updated much more frequently than full bathrooms. While this room is three times more likely to get a cosmetic upgrade, homeowners are more than 50% as likely to update it every 10 years or less, when com- pared to master bathroom updates, Houzz noted. Larger Showers Reign in Bath Remodels, Survey Finds Open showers, such as the one designed by Sol Quintana Wagoner, Marisela Contreras and John Kavan of Jackson Design and Remodeling in San Diego, CA, refect a spa aesthetic.
