"When you're sitting at the island, the curve directs your attention to the sink area and the hood," she explains. "It also gives some extra aisle space needed for the full-size refrigerator and freezer." The light colored quartzite provides a stark contrast with the espresso col- ored W. W. Wood Products Shiloh maple cabinets beneath it while harmonizing with the painted perimeter cabinets that are sheathed in Arctic White with a Black glaze. "She really liked the look of lighter perimeter cabinets and a darker island that she had seen in magazines, as well as the heavier glaze that settles into all the nooks, crannies and details of the doors," says Underwood. CABINET AMENITIES Nine-foot ceilings gave the designer the ability to add glass to the upper units, giving her clients some display space. The cabinets above the refrig- erator and freezer also tip up, making them more user-friendly. Underwood added a 42"-wide double-door cabinet at the end of the island closest to the range for overfow pots/pans storage that complements the primary pots/ pans storage in two 18"-wide cabi- nets to each side of the range. The designer also fanked the range with pull-out spice storage drawers that are disguised as legs. "It was a perfect so- lution," she says. "She liked the look of the legs but was worried about wast- ing the space, so we turned them into pull-outs for spices. They satisfed her love of the look while making them functional and giving him a place to store a lot of spices." Additional cabinetry amenities in- clude roll-out shelving and toe-kick drawers as well as a desk area – for charging iPads, phones, collecting mail, etc. – and a tall pantry for ex- tra storage. To round out the design, Underwood included a few elements that add extra pizzazz, such as the industrial-style kitchen faucet and pendant lights over the island. A vibrant yet soothing shade of blue covers the walls and an inte- grated Sonos system allows for wireless connection to common gadgets. "They wanted to create their dream kitchen," says Underwood. "Their new space is stunning, while allowing them to go about their daily activities as well as entertain with ease." Circle No. 16 on Product Card BEAUTY "At the top of her wish list was a beautiful kitchen," says Underwood, adding that she also loved methodically planning each and every cabinet, including adding amenities such as roll-out shelving, toe-kick drawers at the island and pull-out spice storage drawers disguised as legs that fank the range. Glass in the upper cabinets also gives her some display space. Underwood's client also meticulously searched for the perfect island countertop material, eventually settling on White Macaubas quartzite. "My client knew what she wanted…something striking but not crazy, and she was having a hard time fnding it – until she saw this White Macaubas quartzite," she says.
