"People want their suite of outdoor appliances to look cohesive, and stainless steel achieves that," says Franklin. She adds that larger knobs and handles are a classic outdoor style that is seen on a range of products, from barbecues and smokers to outdoor ice makers and refrigerators. Muraro-Gust says that stainless steel is the preferred fnish, and she doesn't anticipate a change in the foreseeable future. "Not only is it attractive, it's a durable material that can stand up to the elements. It's also easy to maintain – a quick wipe down is all it needs to keep it looking brand new. People want an outdoor kitchen – or outdoor space in general – to have a serene, tranquil feel, one that is perfect for relaxing with family and friends. They don't want to be outside spending time doing maintenance and upkeep on their appliances," she says. "We are seeing fnishes and styles that blend and fow with the landscape, not a big stucco mausoleum stuck in the middle of the backyard," says Ruloph. The undercounter in the cook- ing area is stainless steel, he says, but the work areas under counters are made with matching deck material, giving the whole deck a seamless feel, he says. Slater says that outdoor entertainment areas are often be- ing painted, giving the appearance of a material other than stainless or plastic. The powder coat colors warm up the look in the outdoor space, as well as reduce maintenance, he says. MULTIPURPOSE SPACE Versatility is essential when setting up an outdoor space, since it will likely be used in diferent ways for diferent occasions. For a casual get together, a grill and casual seating might suf- fce, whereas a formal dinner might call for a full prep area, bar setup and an elegant place to eat. "People want to be able use their space in a variety of ways for all kinds of entertaining," says Hawfeld. "They want to be able to entertain, and also cook meals that go beyond the tra- ditional barbecue." Options for outdoor spaces must be fexible enough to accommodate many diferent visions. "Like indoor kitchens, homeowners have certain goals they want to accomplish with the outdoor space, and it's important for us as manufactur- ers to ofer a variety of sizes and styles to meet their needs," says Muraro-Gust. Flexibility also means that designers and consumers aren't always sticking to one manufacturer for their appliances, even if the company ofers all of the appliances they want. People are designing around the cabinetry, which can give the desired consistent look, says Slater. "The homeowners and designers that advise them are mixing and matching appliance manufac- turers for best-in-class cooking, in a similar manner to interior kitchens," he says. Outdoor set ups need to refect what people have inside, manufacturers say. This may mean adding a grill that allows for smoking, roasting and slow cooking, while ofering a vari- ety of attachments to add to the functionality of the grill, says Ginocchi. "Our products tend to incorporate the latest trends, but make those trendy items feel like items that a barbecue enthusiast couldn't live without," he says. "Consumers want options for added convenience and look to accessories and add-ons to facilitate needs. Outside cooking continues to advance – grills, smokers, rotisseries and side burn- ers have become the standard," says Steigmiller. "Ultimately, incorporating a well-designed kitchen outside allows for enjoy- able prep work and cooking while spending quality time with the family or guests." EFFICIENT AREAS Outdoor kitchens come in all sizes and confgurations, but of- ten the appliances are a scaled-down version of the interior appliances. "The outdoor kitchen is almost always smaller than its indoor counterpart," says Faulk. He says the most popular size range is approximately 15 linear feet of appliances and cabinetry. Franklin says that 15"- and 24"-wide refrigerators and ice makers are trending in outdoor spaces, giving consumers the capability to mix and match, and to have the capacity that meets their individual entertaining needs. "They'll spend more time reveling in their backyard oasis if you plan their outdoor space wisely. How much they love it will depend on all of the tiny details," says Steigmiller. He adds that the 24" undercounter units are sought after as the ultimate bar- becue and entertainment accessory, perfect for storing meats, sauces and marinades conveniently near the grill. The available yard space certainly factors into the size of the outdoor kitchen area. Ginocchi says that customers tend to make sure there is ample grilling space, typically with a 36" grill as well as storage space, counter space and seating for guests. Hawfeld adds that people are becoming smarter with their spaces. "They may not create a larger kitchen, but they use the space wisely," he concludes. Brown Jordan Outdoor Kitchens include European frameless design full-overlay cabinets in 24" and 27" depths fabricated with commercial grade 20-gauge stainless steel. Cabinet features include concealed stainless door hinges, solid core doors, leveling legs, trash pull- outs, fxed and sliding shelves and soft-close, self-close drawers. The cabinets are available in 3" increments from 9" to 48". Its extra-deep 27" hood with optional 3" wall extension provides superior capture, removes smoke and protects patio ceilings, the frm notes. Bottles ft in specially designed grooves on the unit foor. This model is designed to weather the outdoor elements, with weather-resistant stainless steel on the exterior. Its temperature can be set from +34 °F to +59 °F. Circle No. 180 on Product Card The Coyote Hybrid Grill from Coyote Outdoor Living allows for the choice between gas and charcoal. The CH50 stainless steel grill ofers over 600-sq.-in. in cooking area. The gas grill features two high-performance iBurners and up to 40,000 BTU, while the charcoal grill includes an adjustable fuel tray, and can cook with either charcoal or wood chips. Circle No. 181 on Product Card Summit Appliance's 24"-wide outdoor all-refrigerator drawers SPR626OS2D are designed for built-in or freestanding outdoor use, with interior and exterior constructed from stainless steel. Additional features include a digital thermostat, interior fan, pro-style handles, LED lighting and a deluxe interior with adjustable drawer dividers and a sliding chrome storage basket.
