58 | Kitchen & Bath Design News January 2015 NKBA Design Competition CATEGORY: BEFORE & AFTER BATH CATEGORY: BUDGET-FRIENDLY KITCHEN Taking inspirational cues from the seashore, this en suite bath created by Erica Westeroth, CKD, CAPS, ARIDO and Sheena Hammond of XTC Design Inc. in Toronto, ON, Canada, incorporates the colors and fow of a seaside retreat. A deep but modest-sized Ofuro tub is sunken into a platform beneath the windows, with a step up to the deck and a connecting shower seat. The glass- enclosed shower area features a wave wall tile that resembles sand washed over by the ocean. The shower wall, decked out in sea foam green colored glass tile, includes a thermostatic all-in-one shower system and LED shower wall lights. A narrower vanity area features a long mirror that makes the space seem wider, with vertical sconces that add interest. The vanities themselves are fnished in a light- toned wood with wave chrome handles, topped with a creamy counter in two thicknesses and a waterfall-style grooming area. A textured, sandy- colored foor tile with in-foor heating pulls the space together. Improving function and working in concert with unusual structural details and materials were some of the challenges for MaLinda Jo Perry, Allied ASID of The Home Depot in Gillette, WY, when designing this budget- friendly kitchen. The designer used the vaulted ceiling in the space to her advantage, aligning the white cabinets on one wall at 96" and the cabinets on the opposite wall at 90". This design element allowed Perry to move the refrigerator, creating more usable space next to the range, where it was needed. For improved function, the client also asked for the kitchen's peninsula to be moved to the opposite side of the kitchen from its original spot, which required moving the sliding glass door over by 12". A focal point of the space, the rich gray tile backsplash began with tiles that the client had already purchased but was not happy with. Perry ran the tiles vertically and added complementary mosaic strips with white grout to brighten the overall appearance of the tiles. Photos: Arnal Photography Photos: Lori Cooper
