50 | Kitchen & Bath Design News January 2015 NKBA Design Competition CATEGORY: MEDIUM KITCHEN (150–350 square feet) Modern gives a nod to family roots in this kitchen, created by Amy Yin, along with co-designers Emily O'Keefe, CKD, CBD and Chris Papaleo, AIA, LEED, AP, NCARB of Amy Yin Interiors in Short Hills, NJ. The team took cues from the client's ancestral home to create a one-of-a-kind space that mixes modern with classic elements. The kitchen cabinetry's intricate fretwork takes center stage in the space and was inspired by the historic wooden window screens from the ancestral home. This design motif is showcased on a diferent scale in the marble backsplash, which includes mother-of-pearl as well as black granite insets that complement the black gloss enamel range. The soft gray of the cabinetry is brightened by the vivid white countertops, which give the room a modern appeal. A large island provides ample space for entertaining and meal preparation, and cleverly designed base cabinet storage keeps everything within easy reach. Drawing inspiration from nature is a common design element when the surroundings are as beautiful as those around this home, but there is little rustic about this space. Clean white materials and wood accents were all that was needed to make the most of the view in this kitchen by Claire J. Reimann, AKBD, of Jason Good Custom Cabinets in Victoria, BC, Canada. The open-concept design incorporates simple white cabinets with modern hardware in the prep area, topped by stainless steel countertops with a seamless welded sink and oversized industrial faucet. In dramatic contrast, the eating bar and island are treated with American Walnut with a fat-sliced grain match. The large island also includes a white neolith porcelain countertop that is 100% recyclable and composed of all-natural materials. Aligning with the angular range hood are three skylights that bring additional natural light to the space. A dramatic custom range hood sits at the center of this open farm-style kitchen, created by Leslie Kalish, CID, CfYH and co- designer Jennifer Hobson of LMK Interiors in Lafayette, CA. Above it, reclaimed 100-year-old barn wood lines the high peaked ceilings, with large white trestles adding dramatic impact. White is also the featured color on the perimeter cabinets in the work space, which includes stainless steel gas range and large side-by-side refrigerator/ freezer. A large island in brown tones topped with white counters is a warm contrast to the light cabinets with darker countertops along the outside. Beyond the island, with white farmhouse sink and bridge faucet, lies the family room, which features large windows to view the lush trees outside. A rustic farm table acts as a space for family gathering and entertaining. Incorporating a third cabinet fnish in a warm grayed brown, the bar area features glass cabinet doors, open shelving, a farm-style sink and tall glass- front wine refrigerator.
