January 2015 ForResidentialPros.com | 49 CATEGORY: SMALL KITCHEN (less than 150 square feet) Corey S. Klassen, CKD, CBD of Corey Klassen Interior Design in Vancouver, BC, Canada was charged with the task of making a small kitchen space function for a single client who works from home and loves to entertain. An airy and open space with a timeless appeal was created using neutral colors and streamlined pieces. Klassen borrowed space from the dining area to add a wall oven and foor-to-ceiling vertical storage cabinets in white. A cooking center along the same wall is fanked by white cabinets and features an induction cooktop and pop-out vent hood, along with a customized basket weave marble tile backsplash. On the opposite wall, a cleanup area includes a sink, single dish drawer and pull-out trash bin. Base cabinets here take on a richer tone with a natural walnut, and open shelves that wrap around to the sitting area provide display space. Engineered quartz in an earthy shade top the cabinets along both walls. Custom bench seating along the wall of windows provides an optimal spot for guests. A classic Cape Cod style was the goal of this kitchen remodel done by Rosemary Merrill, AKBD of Casa Verde Design in Minneapolis, MN, to match the style of this 1940s home. Using the same footprint, Merrill incorporated more natural light and updated cooking appliances in the space. A classic black and white color scheme works well to make the room appear larger and more open, and throwback details such as a glazed subway tile backsplash in gray give the space a timeless yet updated look. Inset painted white cabinetry is featured throughout, topped with dark soapstone countertops. Glass-front cabinetry fanks the window, adding brightness. State-of-the- art appliances include a stainless gas range, vent hood, dishwasher and microwave, and paneled bottom-freezer refrigerator. An angled peninsula includes the sink and faucet, and opens into the family living area. This sophisticated galley kitchen, designed by Robert M. Dobbs, CKD, CBD of Manhattan Center for Kitchens & Baths, in New York, NY, is at home in its urban high-rise building. The monochromatic neutral color scheme is anything but boring, with diferent surface materials in similar tones providing rest and beauty to the eye. The hardware-free base cabinets showcase a high-gloss fnish on a simple, contemporary door style, providing the room with a streamlined aesthetic. Wood-grain fnished upper cabinets are at a lower height and feature horizontal linear-style bat wing doors. Thin, 1/2" countertops continue the linear look, and a square stainless sink and modern faucet heighten the room's contemporary attitude. Appliances include a combo/speed oven that's large enough for convection baking and doubles as a microwave, as well as a carefully hidden washer/dryer.
