44 | Kitchen & Bath Design News January 2015 W hen the owners of this Dav is, CA home ap - p r o a c h e d Na r F i n e Carpentry about transforming their kitchen, they had several objectives in mind. For one, they wanted a com- fortable, unabridged and open space that included a large eating bar "so that the kids could eat and do home- work in the kitchen, without being 'in' the kitchen," says Nar Bustamante, principal/designer of the company, with locations in Carmichael and El Dorado, CA. The homeowners also wanted a design that was luxurious and super functional. "They're a family of fve, and they wanted a space that could accommodate both family and enter- taining," he says. The remodel would include a liv- ing room with a focal-point freplace, nearby stairs and a bathroom that would serve as an everyday family bath as well as a guest bath. The one remaining objective was to complete the design quickly. "We began designing the project two weeks before demolition was sched- uled," he says. "Our design time frame was very, very tight." MIXING CLASSIC WITH CONTEMPORARY With a list of goals in hand, Nicolette Patton, CKD and lead designer for the project, started by eliminating inte- rior walls and pushing back exterior walls, gaining about 200 square feet of additional space for the kitchen and living room. I n t he k itchen, she focused on creating a space that was classic yet luxurious, with touches of un- expected contemporary/dynamic elements. At the design's foundation is classic, white Columbia Cabinets' cabinetry topped with Caesarstone quartz, to which she added materi- als/products not typically seen in classic kitchens. For example, the island features an iron I-beam support leg that is bolted to the foor. The island is topped with a Cambria stone coun- tertop stacked on top of a Qwinique wood countertop. Above, a Varaluz chandelier casts a star onto the ceil- ing. Large-format Porcelanosa tile surrounds the kitchen. "Again, this is something that is not tradition- ally done in a classic kitchen," says Bustamante. Contractors Wardrobe back-painted glass serves as a back- splash at the cooktop/range and the prep sink areas. "It's a very eclectic mix," he adds. Another key component of the kitchen is luxury. "The selection of cabinetry, countertops, fooring, lighting, appliances, tile, etc.…ev- ery component is luxury," he says, pointing to the Jenn-Air refrigera- tor and dishwasher, Wolf range, Vent-A-Hood ventilation unit, Sharp microwave, Dacor warming drawer and Perlick beverage refrigerator. "And it's crafted luxuriously with a lot of detail," he notes. Lighting also plays an important role in the design, especially as it relates to entertaining. "We want- ed lights to illuminate tasks in the morning and during the day," says Bustamante. "But there comes a time in the evening, or when you are en- tertaining, that you want the kitchen to be more like a piece of art." Dimmable LED lighting casts a moody glow. "The kitchen becomes self illuminated in the places that count…in the special features," he continues, noting the lighting un- derneath the cabinets, inside the cabinets and underneath the coun- tertop seating at the island. "It gives a warm, inviting feeling, one that showcases the kitchen as a piece of art, rather than strictly utilitarian." Several special features personal- ize the space, including the family's name highlighted above the refrig- erator. "They wanted things to be personal, so they personalized their kitchen," he says. "Their last name, with the number fve – because there are fve members of the family – rep- resents them as a family." Additionally, upper cabinets that fank each side of the cooktop/range feature mirrored panels, refecting the chandelier as well as the fre- Classic Kitchen Gets Contemporary Twist Clean and classic white cabinetry serves as the foundation for this kitchen remodel, which combines both classic and contemporary elements while adding eclectic touches that showcase the homeowners' personality.
