block top from Grothouse Lumber on the other. "The separate cabinet makes the island larger, without having to seam the top," she says, noting that she was able to utilize almost a full slab of marble. "It also relates nicely to the range wall, providing a great work station and prep area for the range as well as separation from the island. The open shelf on the bottom makes it feel like it is its own piece, more like furni- ture rather than a large base cabinet." Three matching pendant lights over the cherry island and two complementary pendant lights over the furniture-style end cabinet help to illuminate the space. "He wanted something simple and understated," she says. WARM AND WELCOMING Throughout the kitchen, Adams incor- porated details that make the design stand out. "I was thinking elegant farmhouse with rustic tones," she ex- plains. "I included subtle details that make the space look easy and welcom- ing, without being overdesigned." Some such details include the cofered ceiling; two-level, two-tone island/cabinet combination; corbels beneath the upper cabinets along the range wall, and a ledge – cre- ated from Danby marble – that she added behind the DCS range and base cabinets. "The ledge provides a nice landing space for oils and spices," she says. "It also pulls the wall forward so it isn't so far from the island." Storage was also a concern for the homeowner. The hutch was custom designed by Adams and built to speci- fcations by Candlelight Cabinetry. "The homeowners wanted storage with a lot of glass, but they also had a lot of food storage needs, so we added glass to the side and top cabinets – to 'lighten' up the piece – and utilized solid doors for concealing items," she explains. A pantry, which is accessed by the antique pocket door between the refrigerator and hutch, also fulflls storage needs and serves as a place for small appliances such as the mi- crowave, cofeemaker, toaster, etc. Additionally, it includes a sink for easy clean-up. Overall, Adams was challenged to create a space that, while large, didn't feel too large. "It's a spacious family home," she says. "I needed to design a space that was livable."
