"Taking advantage of that view was a driving factor in the layout of this kitchen," says Mary Adams of Kitchen Cove Cabinetry & Design, in Portland, ME. Another important consideration was to make the kitchen fow with the family room, into which the kitchen opens. "The initial foor plan included a peninsula between the two rooms, but I felt it needed to be more open, so I changed the peninsula to an is- land," she says, adding that the rooms are now 'divided' by partial walls ac- cented with antique wood columns the homeowner wanted to include. The homeowner also wanted to include an antique door that was turned into a pocket-style divider between the Viking refrigerator and custom hutch. "There were several character pieces he wanted to incorporate, and they helped drive some of the wood choices made throughout the kitchen," she explains. FARMHOUSE FEE LING The homeowner liked the idea of white painted cabinetry, so Adams selected Flagstone-colored, inset-style perim- eter cabinets, custom hood and hutch from Candlelight Cabinetry. "It's a soft white that evokes the feeling of a farmhouse," she says. To minimize formality and starkness created by all- white cabinetry, Adams contrasted it with the cherry Candlelight Cabine- try island, which is highlighted with a slate fnish. "It gives the island a grey tone that pulls in the fooring," she says, which is engineered wood. "It also allows the natural grain of the wood to show through." The island, as well as the perimeter cabinetry, is topped with honed Danby marble. It is fanked by custom wine storage on one end and a separate furniture-style cabinet with an open shelf and Wenge endgrain butcher Elegant Farmhouse Kitchen Captures River View Maine designer takes advantage of a scenic river view to create an elegant farmhouse kitchen with details that make the space welcoming.
