Consumer Buying Trends { Demographics & buying patterns for the home } ® A CYGNUS BUSINESS MEDIA PUBLICATION SALES OFFICES Remodeling Budgets Apparently Flat, But New Trends Seen Emerging HACKETTSTOWN, NJ — Although some key design trends from the past year will seemingly continue in 2013, the last three months of 2012 apparently laid the groundwork for the emergence of several new consumer-driven kitchen and bath trends. That's the word from the National Kitchen & Bath Association, which last month released its projections for the top kitchen and bath design trends to watch for in 2013. The trends were identifed in the NKBA's annual design trends survey, involving some 300 U.S. and Canadian member-designers who reported the materials, products and design styles they specifed during the fnal quarter of 2012. The Hackettstown, NJ-based NKBA reported no apparent growth in consumer outlays for remodeled kitchens and baths, with the most recent cost fgures for the average kitchen and bath reported by survey participants at $47,308 and $18,538, respectively. By comparison, the total average cost in the previous NKBA survey was $51,050 for kitchens and $18,575 for baths. According to the NKBA, even though broad trends won't be evident in every market, the following were the top overall trends that emerged for kitchens and baths: ➣ In kitchens, various shades of gray have noticeably jumped in use over the past three years. There was a signifcant increase from 9% of kitchens in 2010 to 55% in the fnal three months of 2012. Similar to kitchens, grays in bathroom remodels have risen from 12% to 56% since 2010. Whites and of-whites remain the top color schemes of both kitchens and bathrooms. Beiges and bones remain the second most popular color schemes in both rooms, followed by grays and then browns. ➣ Continuing a major trend from last year, transitionalstyle kitchens and baths have clearly surpassed traditional styles, a long-standing favorite until 2012. ➣ While the use of quartz fnishes was in slight decline last year, it has surfaced as a clear trend-setter this year, coming in a close second to granite in terms of usage by surveyed designers. ➣ The preference for glass splashes has grown dramati- Gray continues to be among the hottest trends in kitchen cabinetry, as seen in this KraftMaid kitchen. At the same time, while natural stone tile showed consistent growth during 2011 and 2012, usage dropped in the latest survey. Ceramic or porcelain tiles held its top position for the third consecutive year, but overall usage fell by 11% between 2010 and now. ➣ Among painted cabinetry, white has remained the most popular consumer choice. Use of light, medium and natural fnishes has remained more or less consistent over the past year. Light fnishes are currently used by 30% of respondents, medium fnishes by 54%, and dark fnishes by 55%. The use of glazed fnishes, which held at 44% in 2011 and 2012, increased by 4%. ➣ Growing in popularity are touch-activated faucets, pullout faucets and pot-fller faucets. ➣ When it comes to faucet fnishes in kitchens, satin nickel has been on top since 2011, the NKBA reported. Bronze or oil-rubbed bronze fnishes are also being specifed more often now, with the increased popularity of these fnishes most likely coming at the expense of polished nickel and polished chrome. ➣ Undermounts remain the most specifed type of lavatory sink, according to the NKBA. Integrated sink/tops are also seeing modest growth, the trade association added. ➣ Ceramic or porcelain tile fooring has been in slight decline over the past two years, but it remains the most popular of all materials. Natural stone tiles have also declined since 2011, although they've been the second most popular type of fooring used since 2011, the NKBA said.
