Those are the key pndings of a pair of surveys released in recent months by the Research Institute for Cooking & Kitchen Intelligence (RICKI) and the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The separate surveys oer important cues for home builders, as well as kitchen and bath designers involved in both new construction and residential remodeling. According to the online RICKI survey, known as Designers Talk Trends, 54% of surveyed dealer-designer members of the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) reported that, more than any other single feature, they expected kitchen remodeling clients to request projects that are customized to pt specipc needs and lifestyles. A high number of homeowners are also expected to seek a more ecient use of space, according to the Charlotte, NC-based RICKI. Other high-demand kitchen remodeling features include more open qoor plans, more storage options, and kitchens that are conducive to gathering and bonding (see graph, below). Less in-demand, but still signipcant anticipated consumer requests will include energy-ecient appliances and a minimalist (simple and sleek) aesthetic, RICKI reported. Some 35% of surveyed designers also said they expect to see their kitchen remodels include more islands in the next year, researchers added, noting that greater demand is anticipated for islands with unique bases or countertop surfaces that are dierent than those in the rest of the kitchen. Two in pve designers point to more clients wanting islands outptted with faucet and sink, according to RICKI. Designers indicated a homeowner preference for one-level islands instead of multi-tiered islands; they also noted that refrigeration is twice as likely as cooking appliances to appear in the islands they design. According to the latest Home Design Trends Survey, conducted by the American Institute of Architects for the third quarter of 2012, residential architects are also reporting a distinct consumer preference for generational diversity in new homes. While multi-generational housing opportunities were seen as growing in popularity, age-restricted communities were one of the few design preferences that architects noted as declining in popularity, the Washington, DC-based AIA said. A greater diversity of home styles and sizes was also reported as growing in popularity. Lastly, the security that comes with relative residential isolation is giving way to homes that oer accessibility to jobs, commercial opportunities and transportation options, according to the AIA.
