Transformations Photos: Ron Rosenzweig I After t f you work in the design industry, its hard not to be captivated by the transformation process taking an ugly, dated or poorly functional space and making it look and work better for the client. While theres plenty of hard work involved in taking a project from conception to completion, theres something inspiring about reviewing where a space started and how it turned out. This month, KBDNs Transformations department takes a before and after view of a problem-solving kitchen that incorporates both aesthetic and functional improvements. Jill K. Greene, CAPS, allied ASID, of the Delray Beach, FL-based Sand Castle Kitchens & More, LLC, recognized that entertaining was a high priority for this client. She began by opening up a wall to create a breakfast bar, which gave guests a place to sit and talk to the client while she cooked. As an added benept, the breakfast bar could also work as a buet space for parties. Greene then moved the refrigerator to the opposite wall, which gave the client more usable counter space while also providing a better overall qow to the kitchen. To address the challenge of the electrical box, Greene got creative, painting the wall with chalk board paint for interest and then camouqaging the electrical panel by covering it with a magnet board that is held on by hooks (which meant it could still be removed or swung up easily if necessary). The end result was a more modern kitchen that not only provided aesthetic appeal, but also gave the client a fun and personalized space that was well suited for entertaining. t Before Challenges for this kitchen project included a lack of usable counter space, a design that did not facilitate entertaining and an electrical box located in the center of the kitchen that could not be moved. Additionally, the space was dated looking, and did not qow well. Ad Index COMPANY CIRCLE NO.
